How to start collecting art

Susan: "Collecting art… it may sound like something for connoisseurs, gallery owners or people with deep pockets. But nothing could be further from the truth! Anyone can build an art collection, whether you are a novice enthusiast or a seasoned art fan. It's not about expensive names, but about what moves you, inspires you and makes you happy. So, how do you start? I'd like to take you into the world of collecting!"

1. Follow your gut
The most important rule: choose what you like! Don't let trends, prices or names overwhelm you. Art is personal and should do something to you. Does it put a smile on your face? Do you keep looking at it? Do you feel something special? Then you're in the right place!

2. Discover your taste
You may already know exactly what you like, but if you're still searching, it's time to get inspired. Visit galleries, museums, art fairs or scroll through Instagram and Pinterest. Pay attention to what you are attracted to: bright colours, abstract shapes, realistic portraits, photography or sculptures? This will help you determine a direction.

3. Start small
You don't have to buy a whole collection right away. Start with a first piece that you are really in love with. This can be a painting, a print, a drawing or even a ceramic object. Art doesn't always have to cost thousands of euros. Many artists offer smaller works or prints that are perfect to start your collection with.

4. Learn about the artist
Behind every piece of art there is a story. Dive into the work and background of the artist. What inspires them? What techniques do they use? How does their career grow? This adds extra value to your artwork and makes your collection more personal.

5. Think about the place
Where do you want the artwork to shine? Art deserves a beautiful place in your home. A large painting as an eye-catcher above the couch, a playful triptych in the hall, or a small but powerful print in the bedroom. Art enhances the atmosphere of a room and gives it character.

6. Give yourself time
You don't build an art collection in a day. Take the time to discover, to doubt and to really find that one piece that suits you. The more consciously you choose, the more you will enjoy it later.

7. Come visit the gallery!
Do you want to experience art in real life? Come visit my gallery and be inspired by a versatile collection. I am happy to help you find that one work that gives your interior - and perhaps your life - an extra dimension. Collecting art is an adventure, and I am happy to help you with it!
